During talks with the head of Uzbekistan, the president of Kazakhstan noted that the “Kazakh-Uzbek tandem is a vital necessity, and only through joint efforts is it possible to ensure sustainable development of our countries”. The presidents discussed enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan plan to install water meters for measuring cross-border water consumption, enabling bilateral online data exchange. Previously, similar gauging stations were installed along the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border for the same purpose.
In Uzbekistan, 2024 will be a period of transition to an emergency regime of water conservation. The process will be coordinated by Adiz Boboyev, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, the president noted. He declared a “peak year for canal lining” as the only solution to water loss.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke about the water issue in Uzbekistan during his visit to Surkhandarya. He urged the need to instill the idea that water is not free and then turn this idea into a rule of daily life.
Uzbek President convened a meeting to address critical challenges in water management. He criticized $500 million in yearly irrigation subsidies, ordered transfer of 300 pumps to businesses, and initiated mudflow accumulation. Plans for pipeline irrigation in Jizzakh region underway.
